De gedwongen nationale geheelonthouding maakte goedwillende burgers van het ene op het andere moment tot misdadigers als zij na een lange dag van hard werken een biertje dronken. Daarom had de Drooglegging weinig draagvlak onder de bevolking, en de voortdurende vraag naar alcohol veranderde de positie van de onderwereld en de gangster in de Amerikaanse samenleving drastisch.\nIn plaats van terugdringen leidde de Drooglegging tot grote bloei van misdaad. De regering, en vooral de onderbemande en vaak corrupte politie, kon de voortdurende misdaad en het bijbehorende geweld nauwelijks het hoofd bieden. Populaire media gebruikten het toenemende geweld om zowel de gangsters als de 'G-men' van de FBI tot helden te bestempelen.\nDeze (Engelstalige) studie beschrijft de ontwikkeling van de georganiseerde misdaad in de Verenigde Staten tijdens de Drooglegging. Zij gaat daarbij in op verschillende criminologische theorie\u00ebn en de rol van fictieve misdaad in de populaire cultuur.\n\nThe enforcement of Prohibition in the 1920s had many unintended side effects. Forced nationwide sobriety instantly labeled normally law abiding citizens as 'criminal' if they would enjoy a beer after a long day of hard work. Prohibition, therefore, did not sit well with many people and the continuous demand for alcohol drastically changed the position of the underworld and the gangster figure in American society drastically.\nInstead of diminishing crime, Prohibition caused crime to flourish. The government, and especially the understaffed and often corrupt police force, could barely suppress the ongoing crime and violence. Popular media exploited the growing violence and glorified both the gangsters and federal law enforcers, turning them into heroes. \n\"Cheers to Crime\" describes the development of organized crime in the United States during the Prohibition era. It examines various criminological theories and the role of fictional crime in popular culture.",
