Als (late) dankbetuiging voor de genoten gastvrijheid vat de auteur de geschiedenis samen van het sultanaat Pontianak, van de stichting in 1771 tot 1950, \u00e9\u00e9n van de vele, weinig bekende autonome staten in de regio.Jer Met de Japanse inval in 1941 begon na bijna twee eeuwen vrede een periode van onrust en verandering, die ook na 1945 voortduurde gedurende de overgangstijd naar de Verenigde Staten van Indonesi\u00eb, waar Nederland in 1949 de soevereiniteit aan overdroeg. In 1950 werden op vier na alle zelfbesturende staten van het vroegere Nederlands-Indi\u00eb ontbonden, ook Pontianak. <br />Following the surrender of Japanese occupation forces in August 1945, and waiting for the return of his father from Japanese POW captivity, the author and his mother accepted an invitation to stay for a few months in the relative safety of the Sultanate of Pontianak on Borneo (Kalimantan). The present book has been written as a belated thank-you for the warm hospitality and safety of those months. It summarises the history of the state of Pontianak from its creation in 1771 till 1950, when all but four autonomous states in the former Netherlands Indies were dissolved, Pontianak included.
