"description": "<p>Artist and naturalist Maria Siylla Merian became fascinated by insects at the age of thirteen and began to paint exquisite watercolours of butterflies and plants. Later, in 1699, she took her own daughter on a trip to the Dutch colony of Surinam to study exotic butterflies, a remarkable act of independence for a woman of the 17th century. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Historisches Museum, Frankfurt, this is the first comprehensive survey of Merian's most magnificent work, collected together from over 40 museums, librairies and private collections. The heart of the book includes 100 watercolours on parchment, her unique studybook and exceptionally rare, hand-coloured copper engravings.</p>",
