It was a testbed for future Soviet doctrine\u00a0and a catalyst for the Japanese political upheaval that brought the\u00a0United States into every theater of World War II.\n\nA rebuilding Russian army (still reeling from Stalin\u2019s purges) and its\u00a0combined-arms doctrine faced off against Japan\u2019s modern bushido;\u00a0the Soviet tactics used successfully here would prove devastating in\u00a0the war to come. The Russian victory here thwarted Japanese aggression\u00a0from Manchuria and prevented the formation of a second\u00a0front, allowing Soviet resources to focus on the Germans to the\u00a0west. Japanese failure at Khalkin Gol denied them natural resources\u00a0in the Russian north and resulted in an internal policy shift that\u00a0led to the Japanese storm of conquest in the southeast Asia; this\u00a0\u201cstrike south\u201d strategy necessitated a preemptive attack on Pearl\u00a0Harbor, forced the United States and its industrial might into the\u00a0war and eventually brought about the end of the German and Japanese\u00a0Empires.
