In a letter to Bernard Berenson in November 1912, Wharton expressed regret regarding her novel, calling it a \u201cpoor miserable lifeless lump\u201d. She wrote, \u201cAnyhow, remember it\u2019s not me, though I thought it was when I was writing it\u2014 that next time I\u2019m going to do something worthwhile!!\u201d",
